Eyewitness News was on the scene just moments after shots were fired at the Dillehay Courts apartment Complex in North Charlotte. The gunfire hit three people, including a teenaged girl.
Less than a week later a John Darrell Kempson Jr., 17, was shot and killed during a birthday party at the Cedar Knolls apartments.
Both properties are managed by the Charlotte Housing Authority (CHA). Allison Preston is the resident safety manager.
"These individual that were victims and suspects of shootings, none of them were residents of Charlotte Housing Authority," said Preston.
Preston says he's working to protect the people who do live in CHA properties and prevent crime no matter the culprit.
From June through September, Preston says private security officers will be stationed at all 21 CHA properties.
In past summers, the security officers were only placed at 14 of the properties.
Preston says he has proof that the presence of the officers can make a difference.
"Due to funding we didn't do private security in 2010, therefore we did it in 2011 and when we did it in 2011 from the summer months of June through September we noticed when we had private security we had a 44 percent reduction in part one crimes," said Preston.
Preston said the CHA will use crime stats from CMPD to determine what hours the officers will be at each property.
"They'll be walking the communities getting to know the residents letting them know they are there for positive reasons," said Preston.
Dillehay courts resident Bryant Ingram says he'll be waiting to see what impact this change will have.
"I'm not going to truly be satisfied until I see the results," said Ingram.
Police were stationed at nearly every street corner in Chicago Saturday as thousands of protesters marched in the streets.
About 100 officers with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg police department were called in to help with crowd control for the NATO Summit.
Eyewitness News anchor Erica Bryant spent the day with officers as they were sworn in and briefed about what to expect. Bryant was the only Charlotte journalist invited to go along with the department for the trip.
"As you go through the streets, one moment things are peaceful, and the next moment, there's a convergence of protestors," Bryant said as she described the situation.
Protesters were using social media to organize and communicate where they planned to march next.
"We have seen different waves of protests pop up," Bryant said.
Some of the protestors were marching for health care reform or immigration reform. Others were speaking out against big banks and mortgage foreclosures.
The arrests of three protestors sparked even more demonstrations Saturday. Police arrested three men who they said had planned to attack President Barack Obama's campaign headquarters, Mayor Rahm Emanuel's home and police stations in Chicago.
The trio was accused of trying to make Molotov cocktails ahead of the two-day NATO summit that starts Sunday. They have been charged with providing material support for terrorism, conspiracy to commit terrorism and possession of explosives.
In response to the arrests, hundreds of people held a sit-in in front of Mayor Emanuel's home Saturday. Others marched outside the bond hearing for the suspects. And so far, they have been peaceful.
"They've been simply wanting to get their message across. They've been interacting with police in a casual, calm, friendly manner," Bryant said.
Things are expected to intensify Sunday when the Summit begins, and CMPD officers will be in the thick of the action.
The officers will be able to make arrests if the situation gets out of control.
"They are traveling in two different units where they have medic and firefighters assigned to travel with them," Bryant said.
The officers are expected to be deployed Sunday afternoon for the biggest rally yet. At least 5,000 people are expected to attend.
